Once a fishing town, Isle sur Sorgue was a real island in the middle of the marshes. Aubes wheels had allowed the installation of wheat mills since the 12th century and then the creation of workshops to process wool and silk. Some of these 62 wheels remain today and give to the city a particular character. The old town, once surrounded by ramparts, retains the charm of a city that each era has left its mark, such as the Silver Tower built by the Counts of Toulouse in the 13th century, beautiful Gothic or Renaissance facades, the collegiate church of Notre Dame des Anges, a major witness to the Baroque period in the south of France. Some 18th century buildings such as the granary which houses the tourist office, the hospital and its chapel and some private mansions such as the Donadeï de Campredon hotel, a place of memory for the poet René Char.
